Update Regarding ICE Activity in Soledad and School District Policy on Student Protections

Posted Date: 6/10/25 (7:00 PM)

Dear Soledad USD Parents and Families,

We are aware of community reports regarding the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Soledad earlier today. We checked with the Soledad Police Department and were advised that the ICE activity was limited to targeted criminal matters and not related to our schools or students. At this time, there is no indication of ICE presence near any Soledad Unified School District campus, nor do we anticipate any contact at school sites.

We recognize that such reports may create concern and anxiety for our community members. We want to reassure you that the safety and well-being of your children remain our highest priority. We would also like to take this opportunity to remind families of the rights and protections in place for students while on school grounds, based upon our policies and regulations:

  • Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), schools are prohibited from releasing student records or personally identifiable information—such as immigration status—without parental consent or a valid court order.
  • ICE agents are not permitted to enter school property without a judicial warrant. Our staff are trained on the legal requirements and district protocols should this type of situation ever arise.
  • Soledad USD would not voluntarily share student data with immigration enforcement agencies.
We remain committed to ensuring that our schools are safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments for every student. If you or your child need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school office. Our counselors and staff are available to assist or connect you with community resources.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.

Sincerely,
Randy Bangs
Superintendent, Soledad Unified School District
